Your Siding Probably Isn’t Stucco

Here is the thing that sets this area apart from the older Sacramento suburbs: a large share of Folsom, El Dorado Hills, and Cameron Park was built from the mid-1990s on, which means the siding is often fiber-cement lap board — Hardie and similar — rather than the stucco that covers older neighborhoods. It looks like painted wood lap siding, and it changes how the wash is done. Fiber-cement takes a low-pressure detergent wash well, but the trick is the lap joints and the underside of every course, where pollen, dust, and ash collect in a line that a quick rinse skips right over.

We wash fiber-cement by working the detergent into those laps and rinsing top-down so the whole board face comes clean, not just the flat of it. High pressure is the wrong tool here — it forces water up under the laps and into the seams, which is the last place you want it on fiber-cement. On the older stucco homes mixed into the area we switch to a stucco soft wash, and on the two-story homes that dominate these subdivisions we reach the upper courses from the ground with water-fed poles.
