Should You Consider Cleaning Your Own Dryer Vent?

Home/Archives forDryer Vent Cleaning

Neglecting your dryer vents can be a major fire hazard in your home. If you are asking yourself about cleaning your own dryer vent here are some factors to consider. Cleaning out the lint catcher can help inside the dryer, but the vent that connects to the outside is hard to reach and becomes clogged easily. Proper cleaning of dryer vents should be done with a company like Sierra Vista Maintenance that knows how to work with homes.

Why You Need To Clean Your Own Dryer Vent

The purpose of dryer vents is to remove moisture from the dryer that is created from damp clothes. There are instances where moisture gets into the vent and creates the optimal place for mold to grow. In order to prevent mold problems, the build-up of dust and lint, and decrease the potential for fire.

Proper cleaning should be performed once or twice a year in order to maintain the integrity of the dryer vent and protect your home. Cleaning your own dryer vent can be done, but in order to protect your home and keep your dryer working properly, the vent should be cleaned by a professional with tools that can reach through the whole dryer vent.

Proper Equipment

Our team at Sierra Vista Maintenance has equipment that is made especially for dryer vent cleaning. Cleaning your own dryer vent will not give you access to the right tools. While you may assume that the dryer vent is short and easy to clean, it can be hard to treat your whole vent and remove all debris.

Cleaning the dryer vent in your home should remove mold and build-up. Leaving these to continue to grow inside the dryer vent will lead it to spread and will not improve the performance of the dryer. Without proper equipment, you could puncture a hole in the hose, push or create bigger blockages, or have your brush get stuck. If you are worried about your dryer vents and don’t want to participate in cleaning your own dryer vent, call Sierra Vista Maintenance.

Disconnection Problems

After cleaning your own dryer vent, a common problem is that homeowners fail to properly reconnect their duct to the wall. When the vent is not connected, it does not work properly and is more susceptible to starting a fire. Experience with cleaning dryer vents is one of the major problems we see in homes that have cleaned their own vents. Our team has the experience to work with many homes and unique dryer vents. Without this knowledge, your dryer vents may experience problems and remain dirty.

If you choose to clean the dryer vent yourself, here are some steps you should take and advice from our professional technicians.

The dryer vent is located on the back of the dryer and is attached by a duct running into the wall. The duct will need to be removed in order to be properly cleaned. Using your vacuum with a nozzle attachment that fits in the vent will help to suck up most of the dust and build-up that is within your reach.

Using a brush can help you reach farther into the vent. A rotating brush or flexible one can improve the cleaning process. After you have cleaned the vent make sure to properly reconnect the dryer duct and plug the dryer back in.

Dryer vents are important pieces of equipment. They allow for your dryer to work by releasing hot air and moisture to the exterior of your home. Without a properly working dryer vent, your dryer will have great difficulty trying to dry your clothing. It is important to be able to properly care for your dryer vent in order for the dryer to work appropriately.

Why Care For Your Dryer Vent?

The dryer vent is responsible for removing moisture from the dryer. This means that there are times when moisture can get stuck in the vent, potentially causing mold to form. Mold in your dryer vent could potentially cause you and your family to get sick. It is important to take the precautions to care for your dryer vent in order to avoid issues with mold appearing. A buildup of dust and lint could also occur. If this happens, your dryer vent could be at risk of causing a fire.

Luckily, dryer vents are not overly difficult to clean and care for. You can clean your dryer vent out on your own, but for a convenient and efficient dryer vent cleaning you may want to consider getting your dryer vent cleaned by the professionals. We at Sierra Vista Maintenance recommend cleaning your dryer vent at least once a year.

Maintaining Your Dryer Vent

Even though it is important to get your dryer vent cleaned out once or twice a year, there are still steps that you can take to maintain your dryer vent. Making sure to keep your lint collector clear is extremely important. Cleaning the lint trap each time you run a load will drastically reduce the chances of your dryer vent becoming clogged. Keeping your dryer vent cleaned out is crucial to helping your dryer work properly.

Cleaning Out The Dryer Vent

The first step to take if you decide to care for your dryer vent on your own is to disconnect the dryer and detach the dryer duct. It is important to unplug the dryer and to turn off the gas valve if the dryer is a gas dryer. The dryer vent should be located on the back side of the dryer. There should be a duct running into the wall that can be detached.

Get Your Vacuum Ready

The second step for cleaning out the dryer vent is to get your vacuum and to attach your favorite nozzle that will fit into the vent. Use the hose attachment to draw out the excess lint and dust from around the inside of the dryer vent. You can also use your hands to pull out any obvious lint from the front side of the vent.

Use A Brush

If your dryer vent seems to be located in a spot that is difficult to reach or is too long to clean out with the vacuum nozzle, it may be beneficial to clean it out using a rotating or flexible brush. Set a tarp or garbage can beneath the vent in order to minimize the mess. Move the brush in and out of the dryer vent and as far as you can. The last thing that you will need to do after the vent has been sufficiently cleaned out would be to reconnect the dryer duct and plug the dryer back in.
